I was born in Nova Scotia and although I moved away as a teenager, I was eventually able to return with my husband and children and have been back “home” for nearly 40 years. I draw, paint, design, sew, knit, crochet, garden, craft…..I have worked at many things in my life but art and creativity have been a constant thread. I began my art career as a very young child; I was inspired by my mother’s doodling and by the TV show “Mr. Dressup”—who had an amazing talent of drawing simple lines that magically, to me, became a recognizable image. My parents bought me a “How to Draw” book and I taught myself to draw. As a teenager, I enrolled in a painting class and so began my love of painting. I studied first-year Fine Art at Mount Allison University in Sackville, NB and took continuing education art classes at NSCAD (Nova Scotia College of Art and Design), but I am largely self-taught. The learning and exploring continue with online classes and workshops!
The work I create is an ongoing exploration of materials, techniques, processes, subject matter, etc. as a means to explore the illusion of an objective world, and the simple but overlooked truth that we are not two; there exists no separation between perceived and perceiver, creation and creator. Themes derived from nature are used to question the creation of our world through perception utilizing word and knowledge, inviting the viewer to experience the emotion in their reaction to the piece, as that is where the reality lies.
When absorbed in the creation, the ego-mind hardly speaks. Work is approached with an open mind and no preconceived ideas of what may be created. The exploration is fresh and unpredictable, always with the understanding that it comes not from personal ideas and concepts but rather from the integrity of spirit, of love.
I am also a trained BodyTalk Access Technician, Certified BodyTalk Practitioner, level 2 Reiki Practitioner, and I achieved Diplomas in Secretarial Studies and Design and Decorating.
