John is primarily a self-trained artist and photographer who splits his time between Lower Debert, Nova Scotia and Midlothian, Virginia.
He received his degree in Applied Design from the University of Maryland and spent the first eleven years of his career in advertising, graphic design and marketing.
John has been married to the love of his life, Dee, for over 49 years. Dee is an accomplished rug hooker in the Nova Scotia tradition. Dee often asks John to design original mats for her. Dee is a certified judge and NS rug hooking teacher.
After eleven years in advertising and graphic arts, a career change sent him into the world of Information Technology as a programmer, system designer, project manager, team leader and business consultant for 29 years.
Life changed a bit when Dee and John bought a rustic cottage on Cobequid Bay. The scenery change of this magical place inspires much of his work.
Retirement brought him back to his love of art and photography. He is a member of the Image Makers Photography club of Truro, NS, and the Camera Club of Richmond (CCR), VA. This past winter, John’s photo won Best in Show at the CCR annual photo contest from over 500 entries.
Besides his photography, John works in acrylics, pencil, pastels and pen and ink.
While is Nova Scotia, John volunteers with the Cobequid Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre and has created posters for Gallery 215 and for Tim Bower’s benefit for the Truro Homeless Outreach Society at the Marigold. In Virginia, he has volunteered by teaching Picasa photo processing at a seniors’ program.
